The WishList is a way to list things you'd like to have, in a way in which you can tell your friends and family
what you would actually like to receive for Christmas, for your Birthday, or just as a general like-to-have for
someone who appreciates you to give you a little something.
How Does It Work?
- Anyone - let's call her Alice - can create an account (it's free) and create wishlists. Alice can add items to the WishList, whether they're available on the Web or not. Alice can add a website address (URL), prices, an image (shown at 100 pixels width; square images recommended), and a rating (how strongly Alice wants the item).
- Anyone else - let's call him Bob - can view Alice's WishList.
- Bob can choose whether or not he wants to create an account (see below for the benefits).
- If Bob wants to buy Alice an item from her WishList, he can:
- Select the item
- Mark it as Reserved - to do this, Bob will need to answer a security question which Alice has put onto her WishList. This is to stop random strangers marking things as Bought when no such thing has happened.
- Go off and buy it - on the web, on the high street, wherever.
- NOTE: NOTHING IS BOUGHT THROUGH THIS WEBSITE. Any issues with the purchase are between Bob and the Vendor. This website in no way endorses any supplier, website, or even the items mentioned by the users.
- Return to the WishList and mark the Reserved item as Bought.
- Alternatively, if Bob has decided not to buy the item, he should return to the WishList and mark the item as Not Bought so that Alice's other friends know that they can buy the item for Alice.
- This "Reserved" flag means that two people should not both end up buying the same item at the same time.
- Depending on the settings Alice has chosen for her WishList, she will be told immediately, or at the end-date of the WishList (such as Christmas, her Birthday, or whatever event the WishList is for) who has bought her the item.
- Alice can then use the website to make sure that she has thanked everybody (Bob, Charlie, Derek and Eve) who have bought her presents.
What do all the pictures mean?
There are a number of icons used on the WishList - the main one is the traffic light,
shown to the left. This shows Red, Yellow, or Green, depending on the status of the item.
- Red means that the item has been purchased by somebody, so there is no need for anybody else to buy it.
- Yellow means that the item has been reserved by somebody who is looking into the possibility of buying it.
- Green means that nobody has bought the item, or is currently considering buying it. That's a green light to go and buy it. First,
though, you shold mark the item as Reserved, so that other people know that you are planning to buy it.
A textual description of the traffic light symbol is shown to the right. This will say "Not Bought", "Reserved", or "Bought".
There are some other pictures, too - you can click on the "hand" icon (
) to reserve an item.
If you are looking at your own WishList, you get two other icons in that place -
Delete and
Open. The Delete icon will permanently delete the item. The Open icon will let you edit the details of the item, such as price, description, etc.
Privacy
If you do not create an account, then nothing is stored by the website other than the name you may be asked to supply (WishLists can be configured to allow or deny anonymous buyers) when changing the status
of a WishList holder's item. If you choose to send an email to the WishList holder to ask them for security password information,
your email address is only used to send that email, and is not stored by this website.
If you create an account, the only human-readable data by this website is your email address. This is only used to authenticate you, and may possibly used in future for additional features such as reminding you of upcoming events of people you have marked as your friends. Passwords are stored in encrypted form.
If you select the 'Remember Me' option when logging in, a cookie will be stored on your computer for 30 days. After that time,
the cookie will be deleted, and you will have to log in again. This is considered to be better than some websites which store
a cookie on your PC until the year 2038 (the longest possible) without any clear benefit to the user. If people really want
to be remembered for a period of longer than 30 days, this will be seriously considered - just Contact Me.
Create an account (it's free) and create your wishlist.
